Meet the latest monster from Mercedes. This is the flagship CLS 63 AMG, which features the same head-turning design as the standard car, but with a more aggressive body and extra muscle under the bonnet.

Tuning arm AMG has added a pumped-up bodykit, with a sculpted bonnet, flared arches and more aggressive bumpers. There’s also gloss black trim for the rear diffuser, plus LED daytime running lights and quad tailpipes. The doors, bonnet, wings and bootlid are all made from aluminium to keep the weight down, too.

Inside is an AMG steering wheel and sports seats, while the revised centre console houses buttons to adjust the gearbox and dampers. The sizzling CLS has the same new 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 as seen in the recent S63 and CL63 AMG models. This develops 518bhp and a huge 700Nm in standard form. But if buyers opt for a Performance Package, turbo boost pressure is increased, taking outputs to 549bhp and 800Nm.

As a result, 0-62mph takes 4.4 seconds, or 4.3 seconds with the upgrade. Top speed is restricted to 155mph on both cars, although a further optional AMG Driver’s Package sees the limiter removed, giving 186mph. Even though the new V8 offers more power, it’s 32 per cent cleaner and more efficient; updated software for the 7G-Tronic auto box and stop-start help it return 28.5mpg and put out 232g/km of CO2.

Owners will be able to tailor the driving experience to suit their taste, with the box offering three automatic modes and a manual setting. The latter lets the driver change ratios via steering paddles. It also has RACE START launch control.

AMG’s Ride Control offers three stages of firmness, while optional carbon ceramic brakes provide huge stopping power. Prices will remain similar to the previous CLS 63’s, from around £80,000, at launch next May.
